Hey guys, yesterday I was wondering how many people can indeed give a reasonable definition of graphic design? It‘s not a profession that has a clear identity in the mind of the general public. Design is a much used word, and can mean many things.
After some research I finally find a great answer in a book that I have at home and I’ve no idea it was there.
As said, design is a much used word, and can mean many things. Fortunately, the general perception is changing, albeit confused, in the wired and product driven world. In the past, when people referred to designers they may have had a generalized notion of fashion design, and perhaps industrial design. But graphic design has been grouped with that ubiquitous term “advertising”. Advertising is, after all, well known.
We have seen it film and fiction and, while graphic designers are beginning to appear as characters in stories, it is doubtful that anyone really understands what this person is doing. Tell someone at a party you’re a graphic designer and you’ll probably find they will consider you part of the advertising world or confuse your job with graphic reproduction and the printing industries.
Designers are so absorbed with themselves that they rarely think about how little the world understands the field. Hopefully, change is in the wind. The public believes it knows what architectures, interior design, or advertising are about, but graphic design remains a mystery. It’s interesting to note, and disappointing, the amount of confusion among educators and other professionals as well.
Few can identify the difference between an industrial designer, environmental designer, or graphic designer. Fortunately, the wide visibility of the web design has focused a great deal of attention onto the look and feel of the sites and role design plays in their success. Therefore, we need to begin by taking a look at the graphic designer’s role, and the attributes and tenets of graphic design.
I’m passionate. I’m creative. I love what I do.
